Wisdom teeth removal using conscience sedation - can you feel anything during the procedure?

I am getting my wisdom tooth removed tomorrow and am terrified. Apparently there are three types of anaesthetics:

1 - Local anaesthesia (conscience sedation)

2 - Local anaesthesia with Intravenous (IV) sedation

3 - General anaesthesia procedures at a private hospital

I will be getting the first one (conscience sedation). My question is: Since you are conscience, can you feel what is happening during the procedure? the pulling, the cracking, the pressure, the drilling etc. Does anyone have any info on this type of anaesthetic? How do they do it without an IV?

My tooth is already fully mature and broken through the gums. I just don't want to feel anything during the procedure!!!

Thanks in advance.

It doesnt hurt with conscious sedation-you just feel a lot of tugging and pulling-Its more of a pressure feeling-personally, I would get knocked out and woken up after its all over-Locals are novacaine-anytghing that numbs the area-local with IV sedation is numbing up the area and then knocking you out so your not awake--General is unconscious all together-just make sure to get a script for pain med after the procedure is over-Good Luck!
Reply:No you cant feel a damn thing
Reply:Everything you described you will feel. It's very scary, you hear a lot of cracking, drilling, and feel a lot of pressure/pulling, but it doesn't hurt, there isn't any pain. I was going to have IV sedation but they couldn't find a big enough vein, so they just used novacaine on me and it was terrifying, but since yours are all through the gums it won't be that bad. Mine were all still under the gum so I think it was worse for me. Don't worry though, no pain!! They'll give you some laughing gas and it'll help you relax. It'll be over before you know it, it's really quick, probably like 15 minutes. Just make sure you follow directions after so you don't get dry socket -- that's the worst!! Good luck!
Reply:I had the concsious sedation and I did not feel anything but the pulling. There was no pain. I could hear the cracking and drilling but nothing hurt. My roots were hooked so they had to do alot of pulling and drilling.
Reply:I had my wisdom tooth pulled with only novicane!!!! and was fully awake...it was fully mature and was broken through the skin..the only thing that I could feel was well nothing it was what I was hearing!!! lol the cracking was not the most pleasant thing to hear but I felt nothing with just novicane..I would not worry to much about it you will do find....
Reply:I would go with the local IV. They may give you an opportunity to change your mind when you get there. They did with me and I am very glad I did. I didn't remember anything or feel a thing. Which is what I wanted.

The conscience sedation is what a friend of mine had and she said she felt a lot of pressure but not really any pain. She also said that they gave her headphones so she couldn't hear any of the drilling. You won't be in pain during the procedure but will probably be sore for a few days afterwards.

Good luck!

The only thing you'll feel during the removal is pressure - as if he/she is pushing on the tooth. You won't feel any pain during it. He didn't use a drill for me.

They administer the anesthetic into your gum by the tooth. If the dentist is good, you won't feel the needle. Otherwise it will hurt a bit.

Good luck. You'll be fine. :)

I have to get two more pulled soon. Eep.
Reply:Well, I had 3 of my teeth removed recently with the same precedure. It didn't hurt at all, although the noises and pressure hurt in my mind, meaning listening to all those cracks made me nausouis, so if you make up in your mind to relax and wait untill its over, everything should be fine.

just make sure before he starts, that u absolutly don't feel anything, don't be shy to say that it still hurts. and let your mucsels relax.

take some pain-killers right after u finish, even if it doesn't hurt anymore, and have some soft food at home, so u wouldn't need to go out to buy.

get some good TV shows on DVD or movies that will take your mind off and take a day off from work, if needed.

Good Luck and have an easy one.

Oh! I took along my iPod, it was a good idea!
Reply:You will feel a good bit of pressure and you will hear the drilling. It will be uncomfortable and can be frightening, but you won't feel any pain.
Reply:I've had all four of my wisdom teeth removed. I had conscious sedation for all. With the bottom 2 wisdoms, I had Novocaine (the doc will stick a needle into your gums to numb the area; it just feels like a pinch like when you get blood taken) and I also had the laughing gas (don't know the proper name of the medication). They'll give you the laughing gas through a mask that they'll put over your nose. Either way, you won't feel anything. With the laughing gas, it'll seem like you're asleep but you're fully awake. You may even dream. You may feel the doc pulling to get the tooth out, but you shouldn't feel any pain. The only pain you should feel is after the fact, your face will be swollen (my sister told me it looked like I was storing nuts for the winter!) But you'll be fine, I was terrified too. Just make sure that you tell the doc if you feel any pain during the procedure, that means he will have to give you more meds.

if it's just local, yes and no. you will feel pushing and pulling, but you will not feeling any pain. the local anesthetic will take care of the pain, but you will feel the surgeon tugging on your body.

you can hear the tooth cracking and maybe even the bone, but, again, no pain.

many times the drill is not used, esp if your molars have erupted into the mouth.

Does anyone have any info on this type of anesthetic?

more than likely you will get 2%lidocaine with some epinephrine. it's 'novacaine'. it stops the sensation of pain to your brain. you may get a valium, before you actually sit in the chair which doesn't no anything for pain, but it'll make the procedure more tolerable for you, esp if you're anxious.

they may change the anesthetic if your taking particular medications or have heart problems (eg hypertension)

How do they do it without an IV?

they administer the local anesthetic just like any other dental procedure with a needle. you'll get some topical anesthetic that'll help a bit, but after the needle, you won't feel any pain.

the procedure should take less than 30 minutes, so relax, bring your IPOD, ask the surgeon many questions, and don't worry. you'll have some stitches placed, some pain killers. get some ice packs, salt water, and soft foods for the next couple of days.
Reply:I had mine pulled about a month ago. I had the local, they numbed the area around my tooth and then I had like 4 shots of the anaesthesia. I did not feel any pain only the pulling and heard the cracking that everyone else mentions. The worse part for me was the needles, the first 3 went in ok, didn't feel a thing, but the last one I felt (ohh boy). For the first couple of hours, my jaw felt really swollen and numb, but after that I was fine, like I didn't even have anything done. Just be sure to follow the dentist's instruction after the procedure, (no drinking thru a straw, only soft foods, etc.. you don't want the clot breaking loose, then you'll just start bleeding again.
Reply:Oh can promise you that you won't feel a thing. The reason being is they numb your mouth and trust me you won't feel a thing during the process. I think the worst thing about getting widom teeth pulled is keeping your mouth open for so long. i recently actually just had mine pulled. so no worries. :D
Reply:You won't feel anything, and you won't care about anything either. The guy wore a helmet (like a welder) when he worked on me, and I remember watching the entire operation in the reflection. It looked gruesome but I didn't really care or feel anything.
Reply:I just had my 4 wisdom teeth pulled today. I was scared of the anaesthesia since it would be my first time with it, but it went great! I had the conscience sedation, like you'll be having, and within a few minutes I was asleep. The procedure seemed to just fly by!

I could hear voices, but I didn't hear any drilling or feel any pressure. They freeze your mouth enough so you can't feel a thing. Just make sure to swallow afterwards or you'll be drooling all over yourself! LOL

After you wake up, you'll start shaking for a bit in order for the anaesthesia to wear off and you'll be peeing like crazy.

Good luck, you'll be fine!
