I am in serious pain 5 days after a root canal. Could a broken file sealed in the tooth be the cause?

The pain radiates from the area that was numbed--the front of the jaw to the rear, up the mandibular joint into the cheekbone and around the temple area and eye socket. I was taking vicodin, then was prescribed tylenol 3 along with an antibiotic that i am still taking, but nothing seems to help and the pain is spreading. I dont sleep well. I alternate hot and cold packs and that only helps for a few minutes at a time. Help!!!

If the broken file is sealed INSIDE your tooth, it is not causing any problems. If either hot or cold helps, you will find that it is better with one and not the other. Pay attention and see which one helps the pain and then stick with that modality and stop the other.





Five days is too long for post-op pain from a root canal. Ask your dentist what to do. If he/she says to just wait and see, I'd ask for a referral to an endodontist or just look in the yellow pages and find one on your own.

Reply:I would go back to the dentist and ask for x-rays. You may have developed Trigeminal Neuralgia - a nerve disorder that can occur after dental work. Seizure medications can help relieve the pain.
Reply:please go to doc get ur iupa done means x ray it will show sometimes filling protrude out of teeth apex that causes pain for a time being take combiflam but get ur x ray done

Reply:You need to call your dentist today. Ask to come in, if something is broken it needs to be fixed.. Or just call the Dr. and ask for something to help with the pain.. Like Vicadin, hoever its spelled
Reply:Your root canal was done wrong. There is something sitting on the nerve of the tooth unless all nerves were removed. Your pain sounds classic. Been there, had that. You may also have an infection or some debris from the root canal may be imbedded in your gum. The worst pain I ever had in my mouth was from a little seed imbedded in my gum. Go back to the dentist and have them do it right. You should not be in this amount of pain...soemthing is definately wrong and it has to do with the root canal. Make them see you right away..that kind of pain is the worst.
Reply:I've had 4 root canals in my life. Most pain was gone after a day or two. The last one didn't go away for weeks. Not a severe pain as you describe, but a dull one. My dentist said it was just sympathy pains! Anyway, RUN don't walk to your dentist. If the work was done correctly, you should not have such severe pain for so long. good luck.
Reply:You could have a condition called DRY SOCKET. I had it with two wisdom teeth extractions and the dentist will put a medicated pouch directly into the hole. Then you will need to rinse it very carefully once that comes out. Go to the dentist and see if that is what it is. I remember the feeling very clearly and you sound like you have it.
