Wisdom Teeth?

I am getting my wisdom teeth pulled out tomorrow, two impacted and two already broken through my gums, and i am just wondering if anyone has any tips for me. What do i do tonight, am i not supposed to take anything or eat certain things? What do i do afterwards to speed up the healing process? I am very scared because this is my first surgery. Thanks in advanced for your help! :)

Wisdom Teeth?
I had my wisdom teeth extracted in 1994 (only one was impacted). I heard all of the "horror stories" about how it took so long to recover before I went it, but it wasn't as bad as I'd heard.

I think the thing that helped me the most was that after I came home, when all I wanted to do was sleep, my mother would frequently change ice packs on both sides of my face. That helped reduce the pain/swelling. Also, Tylenol or Advil will help reduce the post-operative inflammation, but check with your doctor before taking that, since it might interfere with what he/she prescribes for pain control.

I had my surgery on a Friday afternoon. By Saturday I was outside, walking around, and on Sunday I even washed my car!

As for food after surgery, anything soft so you don't have to do a lot of chewing and aggravate the surgical sites. Mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, applesauce, and ice cream are good suggestions.

The doctor also gave me a syringe to fill with water and flush out the "sockets" where the teeth were. That is important so the food particles don't get trapped in the sockets and become infected.

Good luck!

EDIT: If you are undergoing anesthesia of ANY type, doctors do not want you to eat ANYTHING after Midnight the night before the procedure. This is in case you have an adverse reaction to the anesthesia and/or to ensure that you do not aspirate the contents of your stomach into your lungs, compromising your airway.

As for smoking, that is also something that you should avoid after Midnight, and your doctor will tell you when you can resume., It will probably be some time after surgery, to ensure that the anesthesia has had an opportunity to get out of your system. Depending on how much pain you are in, you may not feel like smoking after the surgery.
Reply:Don't eat anything, drink only water if you need too, and good luck the surgey isn't bad but the recovery can take a while just do what they tell you and you'll be fine. =)
Reply:I had the same, two impacted two normal. You should not eat anything after nine p.m. You'll be fine!

Just follow the instructions the give you to care for yourself. Make sure who ever takes you listens as well. You will be out of it afterwords so they can remind you of anything you forgot. Do not smoke or suck on a straw.

It's ok to be nervous but it is a simple surgery.
Reply:Eat before the surgery. The dimwitted first poster who said don't eat is an idiot. You should maike sure you eat alot for breakfast if you're having the wisdom teeth out in the morning, so that your blood sugar is not low. If your blood sugar is low when you have an operation (even tooth extractions) then you can go into shock under anaesthesia. When I went to have mine out, I hadn't had breakfast and my dentist is an oral surgeon and he refused to do the op. until I'd eaten first. Afterwards, they will either give you painkillers or suggest what you can take. Don't worry too much and btw the errupted ones will come out so easily.
