I broke my top retainer, but am seeing my orthodontist in three weeks....Will my teeth move?

I've been wearing my retainers religiously since i got them, but there's been maybe 4 nights out of the 6 months that I've had them that I didn't wear them, and I've worn them whenever she told me to, and my teeth havent moved since then, but my top retainer was broken this weekend. I called the receptionist and she told me she wanted me to come in a week earlier if I can. Should I leave early for work? Im very concerned my top teeth will move without the retainer......I remember when I first got my bottom retainer, my top wasn't ready and I wasn't going to be seen again for a couple of weeks.....and the aide told me I'd be fine (meaning my teeth wouldn't move) and they didn't.

I was in braces for a long longer than I was supposed to and was told they're not going anywhere, but I still needed to retainer. With my luck, I think they'll move when I sleep. Will I be ok for those three weeks till I get a new top one?

You should go in to your orthodontist, or book a earlier appointment. Ya they are going to move. The longer you wait to get a new retainer, the worse its going to hurt when you put it back in.

Reply:I wouldn't risk it. I lost my bottom retainer whilst on holiday for 2 weeks and my teeth had moved nearly to the position they were originally - so two years of braces and it was all ruined. Luckily mine was the bottom so not as bad as the top. I'd go asap and get a new one fitted.
Reply:You don't say how long you've been OUT of your braces and that makes a difference.

You're teeth WILL move. A little less if you've had your braces off for 6 months to a 1 year, but they *will* move.

I've had mine off for 7 months and still have to wear the retainer every night for at least 8 hours or they move.
Reply:Your teeth will move. I hope your orthodontist has the original model (he is suppose to keep it) to make an appliance. Micro movements always occur. This should work out fine.
