If a tooth is broken, how do i know if the nerve was damaged? will i feel pain?

Yes, you will feel the pain and if the nerve is damaged the tooth will decay.

If you feel pain with warm or hot, you've got definite nerve damage. In any case, go to your dentist and let him/her see if you need a filling, a cap, root canal or other treatment.

Get it fixed now before the tooth breaks down further.
Reply:Check if the tooth is chipped (small?) no worries, it becomes sensitive coz, you exposed the dentinal tubules. But if you broke it and the enamel changed color or you feel any pain upon chewing, then that's a problem. Go see your dentist.
Reply:I am a dental nurse, if the tooth is badly decayed then an xray will show just how far the decay has gone, but the best method we use to determine if a nerve is damaged in the tooth is sensitivity to HOT or COLD. Especially if it is hot lingering pain..

If RCT is too expensive just get it extracted.
